Every year during the great migration, wildebeest, zebra and other herbivores plunge into the Grumeti River, risking the jaws of some of the largest crocodiles on earth. Crocodiles came under the spotlight here when filmmaker Alan Root used the camp as a base for filming the story of the crocodile, "There are Dragons". Another film, "Serengeti Shall Not Die", is an inspired tribute to the national park.
Entering the cream and ivory canvas tent, you will be delighted by the sight of the room's grand centrepiece - a colourfully adorned bed dramatically offset by a lavish wooden headboard, styled to resemble a regal crown. Vast and expansive, these beds are made of Tanzanian cypress.
Intimate and distinctive, Grumeti has just ten spacious tents with en suite bathrooms and showers open to the sun and stars. Each flamboyant tent perches on a raised platform. At night you will lie under the cool shade of African thatch grass, stirred by ceiling fans.
Savour gourmet meals in our open-air boma (enclosed reeded area) or nearby open-fronted dining area. Fusions of sand and stone sparkle in the flickering boma firelight, merging with the shape and moods of the land. We offer delicious Pan-African cuisine - all meals at Grumeti are prepared on traditional "jikos" (fires) and stone ovens. Private dinners may be arranged for special occasions.
Twice daily interpretive game drives in Land Rovers explore the Serengeti savannahs and woodlands, boasting the largest mass of free-ranging animals on earth. A stunning variety of wildlife may be approached at close range on these morning and afternoon wildlife excursions. We also offer sundowners on the Kirawira Hills. You may request the sole use of a Land Rover for game viewing.
Bird-watching is an ever-present delight around Grumeti - birders almost always exceed their sighting targets. Sundowners on the Kirawira Hills are a special treat after a day's safari. Excursions to Lake Victoria can be organised and are optional extras. Lake Victoria is Africa's largest lake and the second largest lake in the world. The lake is 50km west of Grumeti River Camp. This fascinating outing includes a safari, a visit to a local village and a panoramic view of the lake from Speke Bay. |
